In this course, the student learns how to assess, diagnose, and treat movement dysfunction of the Upper and Lower Extremities and Rib Cage: Sterno-clavicular joints, shoulder, elbow and wrist joints as well as the hip, knee, and ankle joints are discussed. After many years of clinical research, Dr. Sharon (W.) Giammatteo documented unique Type II movements of the extremity joints. This research also led to the discovery of Type I and Type II movements of the sternochondral, costochondral, costovertebral and costotransverse joints of the rib cage.
The results of treatment with Muscle Energy and 'Beyond' Technique to the upper and lower extremity joints are endless. When treating the lower extremity joints with these technqiues, there is an increase in the 'vertical dimension' of the joint space which allows for normal weight-bearing. There is a decrease - even an elimination - of the friction of the joint surfaces which in the past has led to total hip and knee replacements. The upper extremity joints become free of internal joint restrictions, with allows for energy and power in functional activities. Respiratory and chest pain patients remark on the marked increase in vital capacity and rib excursion with the Type I and Type II rib techniques.
Tendon Release Therapy (Giammatteo; (W.) Giammatteo) is the Advanced Strain and Counterstrain approach to restore elongation and power to the tendon, and is an excellent adjunct to enhance increased upper and lower extremity functional outcomes.
